There's never been a forced induction-endowed production Caterham Seven until now, but supercharging is announcing its arrival in the lightweight special in a big way: the new Superlight R600 is the fastest Seven racing car the company has ever built. Competing in the Superlight R600 Championship from 2013, the racer is the most extreme machine yet from Caterham to take to the circuit, but CAR hears there'll be a road legal version along soon for hardcore track day fans. Last year we reported on a range extender engine developed by Lotus for use in hybrid cars. The range extender engine was part of a joint project between Lotus, Jaguar, MIRA and Caparo in conjunction with the Technology Strategy Board and was designed to provide charge – rather than drive – for hybrid cars. A solution that seems far more elegant than the current Prius-type setups.

We’ve recently had the arrival of the all new MINI, and the next year or so will see the roll-out of a succession of takes on the new MINI. But that process of building a MINI for every possible niche won’t complete until the MINI Countryman (and its coupe sibling, the MINI Paceman) are replaced. That now looks likely to happen in 2016 as, according to Automotive News, BMW is to end production of the MINI Countryman and Paceman at Magna Steyr in Austria in 2016 and move production of the Countryman and Paceman to Oxford and the new MINI Plant in the Netherlands.
